1.    What is the GAA Healthy Club programme?

The Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs Programme aims to help GAA clubs explore how they can support the holistic health of their members, and the communities they serve. The Healthy Club model, which is based on best national and international practice, also aims to embed a healthy philosophy in a club while integrating health into the day-to-day club activities in a sustainable way. It also aims to place the local GAA club at the heart of the community, making it a beacon for health in the local area. Our local approved Healthy Clubs team is the Glanmire & Sarsfields Healthy Clubs team.

2.    Benefits of having a Healthy Club in our area

Our local healthy Clubs team has access to national healthy club resources. This enables our GAA clubs in Glanmire to facilitate improvement in the health and wellbeing of our players and our community. This can be achieved through a variety of activities taking place locally, in terms of physical and mental health.

The Glanmire & Sarsfields Healthy Clubs team keeps in touch with other teams within and outside of Cork to explore ideas in terms of how attitudes towards, and focus on, health can be enhanced. All activities organised are approved by the GAA & the Health Service Executive via Healthy Ireland. The team has received support in particular from the Cork Health & Wellbeing Committee and Cork Sports Partnership when arranging activities in Glanmire.

3.    Healthy Clubs Priorities

All healthy club teams in Ireland focus on the GAA Key Priorities for wellness as follows:

4.    Our Healthy Clubs Team

In December 2022, an application form to join the GAA Healthy Club programme was sent to the GAA Healthy Clubs Headquarters by the Sarsfields Hurling Club. Having been approved, the Glanmire & Sarsfields Healthy Clubs activities commenced in January 2023 to represent Sarsfields hurlers and camogie players, Glanmire men’s and ladies’ footballers, as well as the whole of the Glanmire community. Various activities were arranged by the team throughout 2023, for which our local team was awarded a Silver Recognition Award from the National Healthy Clubs team in Croke Park.
